Fruits and vegetables

If you are serious about being healthy whether you prevent or recovering from illness you need to buy all your vegies and fruits that are organic or biodynamic.

You can find fruits and vegies at the Farmers markets or Mothers Markets. Much of the produce at the markets is not labeled and this can mean two things. The produce has been grown as organic, but the farmer didn't pay the substantial fee for organic certification, but the produce is perfectly safe. The other option is that although the produce is grown by a farmer or in a home garden, it has been sprayed with chemicals.

It is important that you check this if you want to avoid chemicals. I found that not all produce is chemical free at the markets and I also discovered how to get an honest answer. If you ask the farmer if the fruits or vegies are sprayed, you very likely will get the answer ‘NO.'  Let’s face it they want to sell their produce and want to sell it fast.

The best question to ask is: “What do you spray this cucumber with?” or whatever fruit or vegie you are after. Most of them will tell you how they grow. I found that those farmers who don’t spray will honestly tell you. Usually these farmers are regulars at the markets and the market organisers want to make sure that you are getting the right produce. Other farmers will tell you what spray they use or if they don’t know as they are getting the produce from a supplier.

The other little trick I discovered is that I made friends being a regular customer with one or two farmers that I know don't use chemicals and the produce is practically organic. I asked them which other farmers they know who don't use chemicals. I check this information yearly or even every six months as circumstances are changing.

There was a retailer whom I used to buy from, but lately, he admitted that most of his produce are sprayed lightly. To me, the word ‘lightly' can mean anything and I'd rather not buy products for a somewhat lower price and risk eating chemicals.

If there is no unsprayed produce available on the market, I rather pay a bit more and buy my supply from the labeled organic shop or from the supermarkets where most of them offers organic produce.

One of my friends told me that she is buying non-organic produce and washing it in a ball of pure water with some organic apple cider vinegar and this cleanses the produce enough to get rid of chemicals. I am not using that method as I don't want to risk it. I am not sure how this process can get rid of chemicals that get into the produce from the soil. If you have any comments on this, please let us know.

When a fruit or vegie is treated with chemicals, it means that the soil is treated as well and what you are eating is a chemical cocktail. No thanks.

It is rather deceiving when you go shopping to a supermarket and you see beautiful huge vegies and fruits bursting with seemingly good health. Just think that beautiful and desirable piece of capsicum or tomato, strawberry, etc. is saturated with poisonous chemicals and eating them will slowly make you sick and sooner or later you will end up with chronic illness. It is not worth it.

Until next… have a great day
