Should we be washing and sanitising our hands?

The theory of sanitising hands is that as you rub the sanitiser on you will kill all the germs and bacteria on the hands, this is true of course. However that is not the whole story, the sanitising also dries out the skin and happens to a kill even the beneficial bacteria on the skin. It is these beneficial bacteria that are partly responsible for building the immune system.

Washing our hands when dirty or for hygiene is perfectly fine and encouraged. Washing the hands too frequently washes the natural oils out of the skin. The combination of multiple washing and sanitising hands every day has the potential to develop into dry skin, irritation and possibly even more serious issues.
